Analytical Chemistry is the science of measurement and identification of the chemical compounds that underlie most aspects of modern life and plays a central part in the chemical industry. Analytical chemistry studies and uses instruments and methods to separate, identify, and quantify matter. In practice, separation, identification, or quantification may constitute the entire analysis or be combined with another method. Separation isolates analytes. Qualitative analysis identifies analytes, while quantitative analysis determines the numerical amount or concentration. It also involves the processing and communication of information about the composition and structure of matter.

This Analytical Chemistry Diploma course is aimed at providing the trainee with knowledge and skills in analytical chemistry. Trainees will utilize the skills acquired in analytical, industrial, and research laboratories or be self-employed. In addition, the course will impart general knowledge and entrepreneurial awareness to enable trainees to contribute positively to society.

At the end of this course the trainee should be able to:

• Comprehend the relevant physical, and inorganic chemistry principles for use in analytical chemistry.
• Apply different techniques for chemical and biochemical analyses.
• Use appropriate analytical instruments to analyse and identify a given chemical substance.
• Observe safety measures in a chemical laboratory

• Prepare accurate laboratory reports

• Demonstrate the ability to evaluate your own performance

As an analytical chemist, you'll use a range of methods to investigate the chemical composition of substances. Your aim is to identify and understand the substance and how it behaves in different conditions.

The role varies depending on the setting and you can work in areas as diverse as:

• drug formulation and development
• chemical or forensic analysis
• process development
• product validation
• quality control
• toxicology.

Entry requirement

• KCSE Mean Grade C- (Minus) or
• Pass in relevant Craft Course or
• Equivalent qualification approved by KNEC.
