Fitters (General) fit and assemble metal parts and subassemblies to fabricate production machines and other equipment. This Fitter General Artisan Certificate Course is designed to equip the trainee with the requisite knowledge in order to fit, assemble and shape machinery parts and other equipment.

The Fitter General artisan program prepares graduates to be engineering specialists who install, maintain, and repair machines, plants, and equipment for a large variety of industries such as manufacturing, aeronautical, maritime, mining, food processing and packaging industries.

Upon completing this General Fitter Artisan program, you will be able to carry out the following general fitter activities

  • determine suitable material, method and sequence of operations and machine settings
  • fit fabricated metal parts and assembles them
  • check metal parts for accuracy, clearance and fit
  • set guides, stops and other controls on machining tools
  • set up prescribed cutting and shaping tools and dies in machines and presses
  • set controls for textile machines
  • form metal stock and castings to press, cut, grind, plane, bore and drill metal
  • cut, thread, bend and install hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines
  • prepare pattern mechanisms to control the operation of textile machines used to spin, weave, knit, sew and tuft fabric
  • perform maintenance of machines, mechanical parts and fluid power equipment
  • erect machines and equipment.
