Marine Engineering Certificate course which include contents of marine plants up to 750 kW.  It is designed to fulfil the level of competence required to operate marine propulsion plants up to 750 kW. The course provide opportunities for learners to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to improve the effectiveness as Marine Engineers.

This Marine Engineering course is designed to equip students with skills required in repair and maintenance of marine crafts. Marine engineering, in general terms, is the design and construction of seafaring vessels and other objects and structures related to the ocean, such as docks or cordage. Typical classes include naval architecture, hydrodynamics, propulsion system design and material science.

Marine Engineering is one of the marketable courses in the country. Marine Engineers deal with the design, fabrication, and maintenance of engineering problems of sea vessels, including electronic and hydraulic systems and boiler systems. In addition, the students can specialize in systems engineering or architecture, specific to the vessels' design and fabrication.

Project career map

There is a high demand for Marine Engineers and mariners in the blue economy in Kenya. These experts work on or offshore. Graduates can work in the Navy, port authorities, research and teaching institutions, shipbuilding, repair and maintenance, and cargo handling services.

Marine Engineers may advance to Technical Specialists and Supervisors of a team of engineers and technicians as they gain more experience and knowledge, thus being able to move on to more challenging projects that require them to undertake independent design development, decision-making and problem-solving.

You could specialise in project management, research and development, or consulting after gaining experience or work as Engineering Managers or in other managerial roles. Having an engineering background allows salespeople to explain technical elements of specific engineering projects to clients and help them plan projects and install and use systems & equipment.

Experienced Marine Engineers can also operate in shore-based positions wherein they are responsible for vessel refits, maritime engineering safety legalities, and fleet management.

With relevant experience, an established name, and valid professional credentials, you may choose to be self-employed or work as a freelance Marine Engineer.
