Masonry
Masonry is the craft of building a structure with brick, stone, or similar material, which are often laid in and bound together by mortar. Masonry is the building of structures from individual units, which are often laid in and bound together by mortar. Masonry is generally a highly durable form of construction. However, the materials used, the quality of the mortar and workmanship, and the pattern in which the units are assembled can substantially affect the durability of the overall masonry construction.
When students pursue this masonry progrma they learn how to build business and residential structures primarily from brick, concrete and stone.
Beyond discovering the techniques necessary to physically build structures and work with masonry, scholars usually study aspects of architecture and become familiar with regional and international building codes. Management and business classes often round out the program.
Because masons work in both indoor and outdoor environments and are physical most of the day, they require both stamina and endurance.
Certificate programs teach hand-eye coordination to ensure materials are set properly. In many instances, learned math skills are a must to properly calculate angles, stone weight and more.
Obtaining a certificate in masonry often takes one to two years, but it also largely depends on whether the student is going full-time or part-time to school.
Careers in masonry vary by material more than anything else. A graduate may decide to work as a brick mason or stonemason, for example, working exclusively with brick or stone. A program participant may also choose to work as a customer service representative, helping customers select the right material for their architectural project. Students could also pursue a career in concrete work, designing and building foundations for homes and businesses.
