Leather is used to make a variety of objects, including footwear, car seats, clothing, footballs, backpacks, purses, books, furniture, and more. Leatherworking, also known as leather crafting, is the practice of making leather into practical objects or artwork, using molding, dyeing, carving, stamping, and fabrication techniques.

This NITA program in Leather Work was developed to meet the demands of the leather apparel industry.

Upon successful completion of the program students will be able to: 

  • Discuss leather science, sourcing, history, and trends;
  • Employ the use of decorative techniques;
  • Cut leather and demonstrate various sewing techniques;
  • Draw, design, and render leather apparel and accessories; and
  • Design, drape, create patterns and spec leather garments and accessories.

Leatherworking is a great skill to pick up to make everything from practical projects to ornate artwork. Once you start leatherworking, you will be able to apply basic knowledge and techniques to a vast number of projects. The tools for leatherworking are relatively inexpensive, long-lasting, and versatile for many different projects.
