About Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery

Clinical medicine is a field of medicine that deals primarily with the practice and study of medicine based on the direct examination of the patient. This diploma in Clinical Medicine program is aimed at producing top professionals who can provide quality clinical care in the community and hospital settings.

The Clinical Medicine curriculum has been developed by practicing professionals and representation from relevant stakeholders has been evaluated and approved by the Clinical Officers Council (COC).

The Clinical Medicine course is divided into 3 modules with each module taking a year to complete.

Upon completing this Clinical Medicine program the graduates will have acquired knowledge and skills required to work as a Clinical Officer in any medical establishment.

Clinical Officers are involved in proactively managing preventative care, reaching out to patients to ensure they get recommended tests and follow up interventions. Their major functions include; provision of curative, pro-motive and rehabilitative services, management of health services, and participation in health education to the public, act as catalysts of change in ensuring community is healthy for national growth, liaising with community leaders in increasing community participation in preventive health care.

Responsibilities of a clinical officer at place of work

  • Conduct medico- legal duties working together with legal practitioners and the police
  • Implements the government policies
  • Conduct and participate in innovation, research and publication
  • Administration and management of the health facilities
  • Member of Health Management Committee
  • Health Educator/ Lecturer
  • Offering curative, preventive, pro-motive and rehabilitative health services in the community.

Entry Requirement for the Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery program

  • KCSE Mean Grade    C Plain   with
